How to play

  1. 1Tap Play. The ball starts on the paddle. On desktop, move with the pointer, arrows, or A and D.
  2. 2On a phone, hold the lime thumb on the strip below the paddle and drag — the paddle will not jump to your finger. Tap the board to launch.
  3. 3Tap or press Space to launch. Space also fires the laser while that power-up is active.
  4. 4Bounce the ball into the bricks. Tougher bricks take two or three hits. Gaps let the ball squeeze through.
  5. 5Broken bricks drop gifts, coins, gems, and wands to catch — and sometimes fireballs, knives, or bombs to dodge. A shield absorbs one hazard.
  6. 6Chain breaks without missing for combo multipliers and floating +score popups. Clear the wall for a level bonus and a level banner.
  7. 7You have three lives. Miss every ball and you lose a life; balls reset on the paddle. The run ends at zero lives.
  8. 8At game over you can continue this level once (watch an ad when ads are on) to keep your bricks and score.
  9. 9When a run ends, InstantGameBox saves your personal best on this device.

About this game

Breakout here is the classic brick breaker you can play in the browser: a paddle, one ball, and a wall of rounded bricks on a dark felt. The ball starts stuck to the paddle. Launch it with a tap or Space, then steer the paddle so the ball comes back. A brick takes one to three hits. Clear the wall and the next level is faster, a little narrower, and a different pattern. You have three lives. Miss the ball and it resets on the paddle. Miss the last life and the run ends.

There are five distinct layouts — a flat wall, a thick top, a checkerboard you can squeeze through, a pyramid, and a fortress with two lanes — then the set cycles with tougher bricks. Edge hits on the paddle add angle. A center hit is never perfectly vertical, so the ball always keeps sideways motion. A 1-hit brick is 50 points, a 2-hit brick is 100, a 3-hit brick is 150, and clearing a level adds a bonus. Clearing a level is not game over.

On a phone, drag anywhere on the playfield to move the paddle — there is no tiny drag target and no on-screen joystick. At a desk, the pointer follows, and Left, Right, A, and D nudge the paddle. Space or a tap launches. P pauses. R restarts. Pause and Restart sit in the HTML bar above the board. Mute stays on the shell Back/Mute row.

Scores are saved on this device. When the last life is gone, the shell posts the score and your personal best lives on the this device. The game never writes scores to localStorage. A mid-run after a brick clear or a lost life can come back through the shell save if you leave and return.

How do I play Breakout on a phone?

Hold the lime thumb icon on the strip below the playfield and drag left or right — the paddle moves with your drag and stays fully visible. Tap the board to launch. Pause and New sit in the top bar next to score and lives.

How do lives and levels work?

You start with three lives. Miss the ball and you lose one; the ball comes back on the paddle. Clear every brick to go to the next level — faster, a slightly thinner paddle, and a new pattern. Clearing a level is not game over.

How do scores and best scores work?

Bricks score 50, 100, or 150 by how many hits they take. A level clear adds a bonus. When the last life is gone, the shell posts the score. Personal best is stored on this device by the game shell.

Can I continue the same level after I lose?

Yes, once per run. On the game-over card, continue this level to keep your bricks and score with one extra life. When ads are enabled that continue is a rewarded ad; otherwise it is a free one-shot continue.

Does the game save my progress?

A mid-run after a brick clear or a lost life can come back if you leave and return. Finished scores are stored as your personal best on this device.
