How to play
- 1Tap Play. Two tiles are already on the 3x3 board.
- 2Swipe, use the on-screen pad, or press arrows / WASD. Every tile slides.
- 3Equal numbers merge once per move. Score is the new face value.
- 4A new 2 (sometimes a 4) appears after every real move. Nine cells fill fast.
- 5The first celebration is a 256 tile. Keep playing or start a new board. Undo and Hint are on the toolbar.
About this game
Nine cells, almost no slack. Merge tiles on a 3x3 2048 board where one sloppy swipe ends the run.
This is the tightest 2D size we ship. Same slide-and-merge rules as the original 4x4 at /2d/puzzle/2048: tiles travel as far as they can, equals merge once per move, and a new 2 (sometimes a 4) appears after every real slide. The difference is space. Nine cells fill in a handful of moves. You cannot park a high tile in a quiet corner and ignore the rest of the board.
A 2048 tile is not a realistic first goal here. The merge ladder that Classic uses needs more empty cells than a 3x3 can spare. This version celebrates at 256 — a milestone you can actually reach if you keep the highest tile parked and refuse to panic-swipe. You can still merge past 256 if a run goes well. The game is not over until the grid is locked.
Strategy is almost the opposite of a roomy board. Think one move ahead, not ten. Empty cells are the whole resource. Undo is unlimited in free play if you want to test a line. Hint runs a small local search on your device.
If you want the original 4x4, open Classic 2048 at /2d/puzzle/2048. If you want more room after this, try the 5x5 board at /2d/puzzle/2048-5x5.

3x3 2048 FAQ
Why is 3x3 harder than the original 4x4?
Nine cells fill in a few moves. There is no spare corner to park a high tile while you clean the rest of the board. One sloppy swipe usually ends the run. The original 4x4 is at /2d/puzzle/2048.
What tile should I aim for on a 3x3?
This version celebrates at 256. A 2048 tile is not a realistic first goal on nine cells. You can still merge past 256 if a run goes well.
Is this the same as classic 2048?
Same slide, once-per-tile merge, and 90/10 spawn. Different size, different first milestone, and a different saved run. Classic 4x4 is /2d/puzzle/2048. A roomier 5x5 is /2d/puzzle/2048-5x5.
How do I play 3x3 2048 on a phone?
Swipe on the board or use the on-screen pad. On a computer, use arrow keys or WASD.
Do scores stay on this page?
Yes. When a run ends, the shell posts the score for 3x3 2048. It does not mix with Classic or the larger boards.
